WI vs IND: Ishan Kishan makes his Test debut as India’s wicketkeeper in place of KS Bharat

KS Bharat, who had featured behind stumps for the Rohit Sharma led-side in the last five Tests including the WTC Final, has been left out following what has been a poor string of scores with the bat.

Beginning their all-format tour of the West Indies, India started Ishan Kishan in the Dominica Test on Wednesday as their keeper batter for the first of two Tests – a first appearance of the 24-year-old in India’s whites.

KS Bharat, who had featured behind stumps for the Rohit Sharma led-side in the last five Tests including the WTC Final, has been left out following what has been a poor string of scores with the bat.

Earlier, The Indian Express had reported that following KS Bharat’s unconvincing display with the bat in the five Tests he has started this year, India’s team management is keen on handing a debut to Kishan. But his keeping skill against spinners seems to be the lone concern that is still keeping Bharat in the reckoning with a final call expected on match eve.

India have been without Rishabh Pant since the India tour of Bangladesh last year, following which the regular keeper-batter met with a road accident and has been out of action since.

Among other notable selection calls was the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opener, as was confirmed by captain Rohit Sharma yesterday.

In the bowling department, India have gone with two spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja while Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat make for the pace bowling lineup.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica.
