Former President Donald Trump has voiced his support for legalizing recreational marijuana in Florida ahead of a key vote in November. Trump believes the measure is likely to pass and emphasizes the importance of implementing it correctly. This position puts him at odds with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who argues that legalizing recreational cannabis would harm the state’s quality of life.
Florida already legalized medicinal marijuana in 2016, and the upcoming vote could extend legal use to recreational purposes. Trump highlighted the inconsistency of criminalizing marijuana in Florida while it’s legal in many other states, calling it a waste of lives and taxpayer money.
The November ballot will also include other key amendments, coinciding with the U.S. presidential election. Trump, running against Kamala Harris, stressed the need for regulations to prevent public marijuana use, citing issues in Democrat-led cities.
DeSantis warned that legalizing recreational marijuana could lead to Florida becoming like cities with more liberal cannabis laws. Despite the growth of legal markets in states like Illinois and California, the black market still competes strongly, driven by lower costs.
Trump’s stance on marijuana is one of several controversial positions ahead of the November vote, including his recent shift on abortion rights in Florida. His evolving views reflect the complex decisions voters will face.
